This is a very nice antique Japanese lacquered wooden jewellery cabinet. I think it dates to the period 1885 to 95, or possibly a little later. It is definitely Meiji in age. Overall, this little cabinet stands 34 cm or 13 inches tall and just over 25 cm or 10 inches wide. It is 14 cm or 5.5 inches deep.
The black lacquer ground is highlighted with gold, red and dark brown lacquer paintings, some of which are really detailed and beautiful. There are some traditional Japanese hats and helmets, fans, swords and a wooden saddle. The metal fittings, including the lock plate, hinges, escutcheons and handles and brackets are very finely formed. There are 8 drawers, two of which are behind a swinging, lockable door.
The drawers have nice detailing. The larger, bottom drawer has a wavy front. The top two are fitted to match the arched shape of the top of the cabinet. Overall, it is in good antique condition for its age. All the drawers still fit very neatly.
The black lacquer has dulled with age, and it has quite a few chips and small losses and a split to the top where its two wooden halves have shrunk a little. And the key is missing, but it could be replaced pretty easily. But, over the years, I have seen a few of these and this one is probably the best. It is a very interesting and attractive decorator item, or it can be used for its original purpose, a classy lady's jewellery cabinet!
